Depression: DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria

Depression is a mental health disorder characterised by prolonged sadness and loss of interest in pleasurable activities, it is one of the most common mental health conditions estimated to effect 5% of the adult population globally.

The individual must be experiencing 5 or more of the below symptoms for a duration of at least 2 weeks to qualify for a diagnosis of clinical depression. 

Including at least one of these two symptoms:

  1. Depressed mood most of the day, nearly everyday.

  2. Markedly dimished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities most of the day, nearly everyday.

  3. Significant change in weight, either weight gain or weight loss, frequent change in appitite.

  4. Slowing down of throught and physical activity (observable by others).

  5. Fatigue and loss of energy.

  6. Excessive feelings of guilt and worthlessness.

  7. Dimished ability to think, trouble with concentration and decision making

  8. Recurrent thoughts or attempt at suicide.

Depression is treatable by medication and psychotherapy.
